My First Day at ELGi

March 10th marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my professional journey. From the moment I arrived at ELGi headquarters, I was welcomed with warmth and hospitality. The HR team ensured the onboarding process was smooth, and the welcome kit was a thoughtful gesture that made me feel part of the family right away.

Later that day, I visited the ACP plant, where I met my team and reporting manager. A guided tour of the facility gave me my first real insight into ELGi’s operations. I was genuinely impressed by the world-class infrastructure and the technological advancements that support ELGi’s global reputation. That day filled me with confidence — I knew I was in the right place to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully.

A Typical Day at ELGi

As a Production Engineer, no two days are exactly alike, but each day is packed with opportunities to learn and make a difference.

The day begins with discussions alongside my colleagues — aligning priorities, pre-planning operations, and ensuring our shop floor team has everything they need. We focus on machine readiness, maintenance requirements, and safety checks, all of which are supported by the maintenance team.

Our midday break is a welcome recharge, thanks to the healthy meals provided within the organization. The second half of the day is dedicated to preparing for the next shift, which involves executing load plans, ensuring material availability, and aligning the workforce.

The day usually ends with a sense of satisfaction as I leave the facility, watching the sunset, knowing I’ve contributed to something meaningful.

Building the Foundation at EVTS

In 2017, I joined the ELGi Vocational Training School (EVTS) after completing my 12th standard. EVTS gave me more than technical knowledge — it gave me confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of purpose. The three years I spent there, with hands-on training and classroom learning, prepared me for real-world challenges. More importantly, it instilled a belief that growth is always within reach when you’re in the right environment.

Stepping into the Shop Floor

In 2021, I began my professional journey as a Technical Associate in the Casting Machine Shop. Transitioning from training to real-time production was exciting and challenging. With every new machine, operation, and task, I gained technical expertise. The support from my team and the trust they placed in me made it easier for me to learn, contribute, and evolve.

ELGi also stood by me during this phase — not just professionally but personally. The work environment fostered stability, growth, and a strong sense of belonging.

Finding My Creative Space — ELGi Talkies

While my technical role kept me engaged, ELGi also encouraged me to explore my creative side. I became part of ELGi Talkies, a platform to showcase the company’s culture and values through videos. From acting and video editing to scriptwriting and music creation, I found a space to express my creativity. It was rewarding to contribute beyond my technical role and connect with people across departments.

I also participated in company events, such as Family Day and Sports Day, which allowed me to build relationships and grow in confidence outside the shop floor.

My journey with ELGi began in September 2019, and over the years, it has become more than just a workplace. It’s been a space where I have grown professionally, personally, and emotionally.

I started my journey at ELGi in the ROCD and RCD machine shops, gaining hands-on experience in machining operations. During the pandemic, I transitioned into the Top Block Assembly area, which further broadened my skills and understanding of production processes. Today, I’m responsible for managing the ROCD and RCD machine shops, where I focus on streamlining operations and driving efficiencies. Each role has helped me become more versatile and solution-oriented, with every task reinforcing the value of our work, not just for ELGi but for the customers we serve.

Rising Through a Crisis — The COVID Chapter

One of the most challenging phases in my journey was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst uncertainty, ELGi’s safety protocols and care for employees had a lasting impact on me. Wearing multiple masks and face shields, sanitizing machines after every shift, and maintaining distance became the new normal. Even under pressure, our team continued to keep production running. I truly felt protected and valued.

Purpose in Every Process — A Day in My Life

My day starts with a Gemba walk, followed by reviewing process improvements, monitoring machining performance, and coordinating with cross-functional teams. I focus on driving shop floor enhancements, implementing safety practices, and supporting productivity improvements. In addition to managing day-to-day operations, I actively contribute to EWM practices and support the SMT team, ensuring smoother workflows and stronger inventory management. Every small improvement feed into our larger goal of operational excellence. Being part of this continuous improvement journey is both fulfilling and motivating.

Learning, Leading, and Celebrating Wins

One of the proudest moments in my ELGi journey was winning the Technical Contest during Technology Day 2024. Competing with skilled minds and being recognized for my work gave me a huge confidence boost.

One more highlight in my journey was our team’s participation in the IMTMA Productivity Championship Awards (PCA) 2025. I initiated the first-round presentation and was part of the team that progressed to the second round. Building on this success, our case study, “Productivity and Efficiency Enhancement in Aircenter Machine Shop: A Strategic Approach,” has been shortlisted for presentation at the National Productivity Summit 2025 at Le Meridien, Ahmedabad. Preparing this case study helped me enhance my communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. It is a proud moment to represent our team at a prestigious national forum.

I began my journey at ELGi in the last week of January 2025 as part of the Academy Team under the Sales Transformation division in the East Region. Back then, I felt like a traveller navigating unfamiliar terrain. But with the mentorship of a seasoned leadership team, I quickly adapted. Igniting the Vision

Pranabesh’s aspiration to become an Ironman began when he completed the demanding "TUFF MAN" duathlon in 2020, igniting his desire to conquer the 140.6-mile triathlon challenge. Crossing the Ironman Italy finish line became one of his ultimate goals.

"It wasn’t merely a test to overcome but a personal dream," Pranabesh stated emphatically. “Each hurdle I faced brought me closer to the moment when the words ‘You are an Ironman’ would ring in my ears."

His faith in the importance of the three V’s— Visualize, Verbalize, and Vitalize, kept him focused, even when facing challenges that could have derailed his journey.

Journeying Towards Ironman Italy

For six months, Pranabesh adhered to a rigorous training regimen designed by his coach. His day began at 4 AM with gratitude rituals, followed by focused training sessions during weekdays and extended periods of practice on weekends. This routine required relentless commitment and time management to balance his work and family life.

The training involved swimming, cycling, and running—the three components of a triathlon. Each activity presented its own set of challenges. Cycling, in particular, was demanding due to its uphill sections. During the race, a brake malfunction tested his mental resilience, but that did not stop him from completing the race.

Conquering Obstacles

Pranabesh faced numerous challenges, including time constraints and the pressure of balancing his passion with family responsibilities. However, with the steadfast support of his coach and strong self-belief, he overcame these hurdles.

"My family played a crucial part in making this happen," he said with gratitude. "Even though they couldn’t be present on race day, their support and unshakeable faith motivated me throughout the journey."

The Excitement of Race Day

Ironman Italy attracted a crowd of 2,800 participants, all striving to complete the gruelling event—a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Pranabesh completed the race in 13 hours, 58 minutes, and 55 seconds, placing 1,957th overall and securing the 242nd position in his age group.
At the finish line, when the announcer declared, "You are an Ironman," it felt as though years of effort had finally paid off. "It felt like a dream," he reminisced. "The vision I had been holding onto for so long had finally become a reality."

Thinking About the Future

Having recently completed Ironman Italy, Pranabesh now looks forward to even greater challenges. His aspirations include participating in the Global Ironman Championship, tackling the Ultraman event (double the distance of an Ironman), and swim the English Channel, North Channel, and even from India to Sri Lanka.
