“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.”

—Jane Goodall

Today, we live in a world, in which each of us is faced with the imperative of tackling climate change and responding to radical, fast paced shifts in global technology, consumption and population patterns. The emerging answer, gaining widespread consensus, is that sustainable development in perhaps the only way by which we can avert environmental and social disaster.

Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, is at the very of core sustainable development. And world over, our world leaders are working towards this, making important progress in improving lives, helping decline extreme poverty and child deaths, improving greater access to education, jobs, and building sustainable energy, developing sustainable consumption and production policies.
The post Towards a sustainable future first appeared on ELGi.

Every year, almost 2 million litres of oil is released into the atmosphere. It is a growing concern, especially given the increasing greenhouse gases. Industries around the world are focusing on reducing their carbon footprint to adhere to international compliance norms.

ELGi has been focused on ensuring that its products are energy efficient and therefore have minimal impact on the environment, at no additional cost. With a first-of-its kind heat recovery system, ELGi is using 96% of the waste heat generated by air compressors to heat air (space) and water. This in turn eliminates the need for additional equipment to heat water and reduce CO2 emissions.

Apart from this, ELGi has been involved with several projects around the world to help conserve natural resources.

Cleaning Mirror Lake in the US

When the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control in the US wanted to clean the historic Mirror Lake in Dover, they partnered with ELGi air compressors.

ELGi’s Rotair D300K compressors were used to fire carbon pellets to the bottom of the lake to trap contaminants.
The post Sustainability takes centre stage first appeared on ELGi.

At the rate we dispose of them, in 2050 there will be more plastic bags than fish in the water. There already are 4 trillion plastic bags, bottles and containers afloat in the oceans. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch was discovered to the west of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean sometime in the late 80s, the same decade that plastic bags began to be used in supermarkets across the world. This field of debris continues to grow at an alarming rate and is now almost the size of India itself.
The post Plastic. Pelicans, among the largest birds capable of flight and with extraordinarily large and extensible bills, have been sighted in recent years in the Pallikaranai marshes of Chennai. These large cities with intense human activity have water courses that are polluted. Why then do birds such as pelicans, flamingos and others congregate here?
The post Wild Wild Waste! first appeared on ELGi.

A one of a kind drilling operation, never before attempted in the history of South Africa took place here. It was necessitated by the need for clean, potable water for its population.

Springs is an old mining town. Until the 1960s, coal and gold mining dominated the local economy. This fact would have a major impact on the future of the town and pose certain health challenges that’d require modern technology to resolve.

The township of Springs is named after the many natural fountains that were found in the area by the early gold explorers. Here, aquifers or natural underground water bodies are in abundant supply, which means water is plentiful. The problem however, wasn’t with the quantity but the quality of water. The reason for the poor quality of water lay in the industrial past of the place.
The post Hi-Tech For Deep Drilling first appeared on ELGi.

Imagine going on a long drive in the countryside; you cruising along a quiet, winding road. As you drive, you hear the wind catching the trees in gusts. There’s a brook running by the side of the road. You draw in a deep breath, and note with great satisfaction that the air is rich with the smell of ripening grain. A beautiful setting, isn’t it?

Fast-forward to 50 years from now and this long drive may just remain a figment of our imagination. It’s time to face the grim reality. As humans of the early 21st century, we are addicted to fossil fuels. From our early morning tea, the car we drive to the late-night TV show binge, every aspect of our existence is run by coal, oil and natural gas. They are prerequisites for the running of any industry, business or public transport comprehensible. In the not-so-distant future, the earth will run out of all non-renewable sources of energy.

The formation of fossil fuels is an incredibly slow process. It was after millions of years, that remains of dead plants and animals deep inside the earth’s crust, were transformed into fossil fuels. Today, fossil fuels are being exploited rapidly, depleting the finite reserves at an unprecedented rate. World consumption of primary energy tremendously increased from 3.8 billion tonnes of oil equivalent in 1965 to 13.17 billion tonnes in 2015. Global warming is keeping in step with fossil fuel usage, as alarming levels of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere every day.
The post Fueling The Future first appeared on ELGi.
