Sustainability lies at the core of ELGi’s business. Whether it is developing energy-efficient products or creating eco-friendly green hubs for workspaces, sustainability is integral to the corporate identity and is actively advocated by employees.

This is why, to honour the 50th Anniversary of World Earth Day on 22nd April 2020, ELGi launched the ‘Steps For Change’ programme, a purpose-driven engagement activity. Through the initiative, employees across the globe were encouraged to take small, yet significant measures and make a difference towards the environment.

There are over 228,450 known species of flora and fauna in the oceans. It is also believed that there may be as many as 2 million species yet to be discovered!

Diving underwater to study the existence of these species has become one of the most popular adventure tourism activities over the years. 

As you descend below the surface, you are overcome with a deep sense of euphoria, a discovery of freedom and tranquility and the genuinely marvelous underwater species!

ELGi has been focused on ensuring that its products are energy efficient and therefore have minimal impact on the environment, at no additional cost. With a first-of-its kind heat recovery system, ELGi is using 96% of the waste heat generated by air compressors to heat air (space) and water. This in turn eliminates the need for additional equipment to heat water and reduce CO2 emissions.

Apart from this, ELGi has been involved with several projects around the world to help conserve natural resources.

Cleaning Mirror Lake in the US

When the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control in the US wanted to clean the historic Mirror Lake in Dover, they partnered with ELGi air compressors.

ELGi’s Rotair D300K compressors were used to fire carbon pellets to the bottom of the lake to trap contaminants.

While the battle between contact lenses v/s glasses continues to pique interest and gain a following on either side, simply put, some people prefer glasses and don’t see the benefits in contacts. While others discover great convenience from contact lenses and like to believe that they make them look more attractive!

A clear sunny day, a picnic basket, a game of frisbee and enjoying a sunset by the lake – doesn’t it sound perfect? Sadly, though, if the latest reports are to be believed, 50 percent of the lakes in the world are polluted. Even if it seems glittery blue on the surface, life underneath may be choking.

In 1727, while experimenting with animal urine, Dutch Scientist, Herman Boerhaave, isolated the primary component of urine. He discovered a colourless, odourless solid, which we now know as Urea or Carbamide. The discovery is often attributed to French Chemist, Hilaire Rouelle as well, who isolated it in 1773.

Urea is a major component found in mammal urine. It is produced by various chemical reactions involved in metabolising food. Amino acids, simpler form of proteins, are metabolised and converted to ammonia, CO2, water and energy in the liver. Ammonia, however, is toxic to cells and needs to be excreted from the body. The liver converts ammonia to urea, which is non-toxic and can be safely carried in the bloodstream to the kidneys. From there, it is eliminated as a part of urine. Nitrogen is an important element found in urea which provides nutrients to the soil, essential for good crop production. However, since urea was known to be found in animal urine and bladders, it was quite cumbersome to produce it.
